Scheduling is flexible, but will require some evening and Saturday hours. The successful candidate will report to the Exhibit Educator of Keep Midland Beautiful. Position starts around June 5th, 2017 and will complete around September 1st, 2017.

While an employee of Keep Midland Beautiful, this position is based at the Centennial Library.

Keep Midland Beautiful is an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful. Through broad-based community support, volunteer engagement and with leadership from the Board of Directors, KMB has been recognized for continuous program excellence since 1986, including membership in the Keep America Beautiful President’s Circle, and receipt of the Keep Texas Beautiful Sustained Excellence and Gold Star Awards. The Midland County Public Library is one of the only libraries in the nation combining traditional library and museum services. Featured in national publication Library Journal as a “Destination Place,” the Centennial Library is the winner of the International Interior Design Association and American Library Association’s biennial 2014 award for Interior Design in Public Libraries over 30,000 square feet. Over the last five years, the Midland County Public Library System’s innovative services and staff have won numerous national, state and local awards, and have been featured in numerous state and national publications.

Keep Midland Beautiful and the Library are partnering this summer to bring a world-class exhibit called Super Kid Saves the World to the Centennial Library’s exhibit space.

The Super Kid Saves the World exhibit was developed by the Magic House Children’s Museum in St. Louis, and is based on the British children’s book, George Saves the World by Lunchtime written by Jo Readman and illustrated by Ley Honor Roberts. The book features an ordinary family, who in the course of a day save the world simply by making responsible choices. The exhibit based on this book is comprised of seven modules that teach participants the importance of Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling, as well as resource conservation and beautification. Those modules include: The House, The Garden, The Re-Use Charity Shop, The Farmer’s Market, The Recycle Center, The Reduce Fuel Station and The Research Lab.

The Exhibit Docent will be responsible for:
  • Sharing excitement and enthusiasm for the exhibit by actively interacting with patrons to create shared experiences.
  • Tracking data by talking to people. Find out where they’re from, why they’re here, how they heard about the exhibit. What they like about it, what they don’t, etc.
  • Familiarizing yourself with the content of the exhibit, knowing it forwards and backwards so you can wow patrons with your knowledge and expertise.
  • Maintaining spreadsheets to analyze data and prepare weekly reports that evaluate the exhibit and programming.
  • Maintaining exhibit materials.
  • Facilitation of activities and programming in conjunction with the exhibit.
  • Other exhibit related duties as assigned.
 Requirements for success:
  • An interest in Environmental Education. Keep Midland Beautiful’s work focuses on the themes of litter prevention, beautification and waste reduction, so a foundation or interest to learn more about any of these topics is highly sought after.
  • High flexibility quotient. You must be very “go with the flow,” ready to kick it into high gear at a moment’s notice, but also understand that there are going to be down times when things aren’t busy.
  • Engagement. Sometimes you’ll have to approach patrons and engage them - don’t wait for them to address you.
  • Willingness to learn. Further exploration of content area is a must so we can educate and assist patrons to the best of our ability.
  • Superior customer service skills. Go above and beyond to create an exceptional experience for library patrons.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred. We want to provide the best possible learning experience for our patrons, many of whom are Spanish speakers.
  • Recommended: education and/or museum experience and a base knowledge Reducing, Reusing, Repairing and Recycling

As a temporary, part-time position, no benefits will be provided. Pay is $12-$15/hour DOE.
