 Keep Midland Beautiful is...

National Water Quality Month, celebrated every August, is a time to reflect on the importance of clean water for our health, environment, and communities. Here's an overview of its purpose, history, and ways to get involved:

 Purpose

National Water Quality Month raises awareness about the limited supply of fresh water and the need to protect it. It encourages individuals and communities to consider how daily actions—like using pesticides or disposing of waste—can impact water quality.

History

The observance stems from two major U.S. laws:

  • Clean Water Act (1972): Regulated pollutants in surface water.
  • Safe Drinking Water Act (1974): Protected groundwater and public water systems.

In 2005, the EPA and the United Nations established National Water Quality Month to promote civic engagement and conservation efforts.

Why It Matters

Clean water is essential for:

  • Public health: Preventing illness from bacteria and harmful algal blooms.
  • Recreation: Safe swimming, fishing, and kayaking.
  • Ecosystems: Supporting wildlife and plant life.

How to Get Involved

Here are simple actions you can take:

  • Reduce runoff: Use fewer lawn chemicals and properly dispose of waste.
  • Report pollution: If you see discolored water, strong odors, or dead wildlife, notify local authorities.
  • Stay informed: Sign up for swim advisories and water quality alerts in your area.
  • Volunteer: Join local clean-up efforts or educational programs.

Don't forget, this summer we will have our Clue Crew Club, once a month, during June, July, and August.

Keep an eye on our event calendar and join us all summer long for fun and educational events!
