In September 2019, Keep Midland Beautiful recognized that Midland area schools needed help recycling their paper, plastic, cardboard, and even aluminum cans. We set up a pilot program for school recycling and taught students of all ages in several different schools how to recycle here in Midland.
In the Spring of 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we restructured our program. We now educate the student leaders, i.e. Student Council, Ambassadors or the Green Team, at the participating schools about how to recycle properly in Midland. The student leaders then put together their own presentations and lessons and teach the rest of the students about how to recycle for their school. We have found that by teaching student leaders and they in turn teaching other students, the seed for recycling spreads and grows faster.
Some schools only do paper and plastic, while others also include cardboard. At least one of our schools has turned recycling into a competition with ice cream socials on the line! Several schools are using the aluminum cans to help fundraise for things they need or want for the students.
We educate and support each school so that their recycling program fits into their school life. We want this to be as easy as possible because then recycling becomes a habit for life! We are grateful to our In-School Recycling sponsors for giving us the ability to offer this program to Midland area schools.
